Congratulations to the late Kent Buttars, the 2024 Utah Hall of Fame Award recipient.
Kent Buttars is a fifth-generation dairyman from Elwood, Utah, whose dedication to the dairy industry spans decades and generations. His family's dairy legacy began in 1908 when his grandfather started the farm with 80 acres, transitioning from a sheep ranch to a dairy operation. Despite initially not liking to milk cows, Kent’s grandfather enjoyed cooking meals, while Kent’s grandmother handled the milking. This partnership laid the foundation for a family tradition that continues to thrive today.
In high school, Kent had dreams of owning a retail men’s clothing store, but after gaining experience in the retail world, he realized his true passion was on the farm. Upon returning from his church mission, Kent embraced the family farm, marking the start of his partnership with his brother Craig. Later, his son Daniel joined the operation, and now Kent’s grandson, Jace, is the fifth generation working on the farm.
Kent’s pride in maintaining the family farm is matched by his active involvement in the dairy industry. Over the years, Kent has served on various boards, including the local Dairy Herd Improvement Association, the National Dairy Herd Information Board, and the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding. He has also contributed to the Western Spring National Dairy Show and the state Holstein board.
What Kent values most, however, is the impact the farm has had on his family. His children have grown up with a strong sense of responsibility and a love for the farm, and they cherish the memories of their time spent working together. Today, Kent’s grandchildren carry on the tradition, playing in the cotton seed, riding four-wheelers, and visiting the baby calves—activities that Kent’s children once enjoyed.
Kent’s legacy is one of hard work, commitment, and family. His dedication to the farm, his community, and the dairy industry has ensured that the Buttars name remains synonymous with success and stewardship in Utah’s dairy history.
Congratulations once again to Kent Buttars for being honored with Dairy West’s 2024 Utah Hall of Fame Award!
