Unbottled Chocolate Milk FAQs

WHAT IS UNBOTTLED CHOCOLATE MILK?

Unbottled Chocolate Milk is an exclusive shelf-stable product that’s great for fueling our Utah athletes! It’s no different than the delicious, whole-chocolate milk that all of us enjoy, except that it can be stored without refrigeration. Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, we will be providing Unbottled Chocolate Milk to our local high school athletic programs and various other programs that we support.

HOW CAN MILK BE SHELF-STABLE?

Milk is made shelf-stable (refrigeration not required for storage) by pasteurizing it at a higher temperature. This is called ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurization.

The combination of UHT pasteurization and packaging sterilization ensures that the milk lasts up to 12 months on the shelf without refrigeration.

IS IT STILL REAL MILK?

Yes! It’s the same high-quality milk sourced from local dairy farms. There are no meaningful changes to the nutrient package of milk as a result of UHT pasteurization.

IS SHELF-STABLE MILK GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

Dairy farms are committed to producing the purest milk possible on the farm. Farmers work hard to be environmentally sound and dairy processors work to continue that tradition at the processing plant. Shelf-stable milk is being made in smaller packages to help prevent food waste.

While the Unbottled Chocolate Milk can be stored at room temperature (ideally 35 to 90 degrees F), it is best served cold. Please chill before serving.
